Supplemental Instructions for using DESQview
with Micro Display Systems GENIUS
The following information applies to DESQview version 2.01 or
later, used with a Micro Display Systems THE GENIUS display
adapter and monitor.
FEATURES
DESQview when used with the GENIUS display, will allow you to
have windows over the entire screen area. DESQview can
arrange the screen to view 25, 41, 66, or 82 lines by 80
columns. DESQview window sizes can be set to use the entire
screen or view three full normal applications screens (25
lines) simultaniously.
DESQview also supports applications using either GENIUS
graphics modes, and will fully restore the screen when that
application becomes foreground.
DESQview can be used with the VHR utility on windows that
write directly to the screen, such as LOTUS 1-2-3 dual
monitor, Microsoft Word, etc.
DESQview will automatically load Lotus 1-2-3 in a window and
adjust the number of rows displayed in the window to the
maximum window size.
INSTALLATION
So DESQview can take full advantage of your GENIUS display,
note the following changes to the normal DESQview
installation procedure:
o Install the VHR_ANSI.SYS file (found on the GENIUS
UTILITIES diskette) in the CONFIG.SYS file used to boot
DOS on your PC. (This will only be needed if you wish to
use the VHR program in windows which "Writes directly to
screen".)
o Install DESQview as described in the DESQview manual
Chapter 1. When the DESQview Setup screen appears do the
following:
Select "Enter" for the ADVANCED setup procedure.
Select "V" for Video Monitor.
In the first field type 5 for other.
In the Current Graphics field type "GRFGNS.DVR".
Press Enter to continue with DESQview's installation.
CHANGING A PROGRAM'S INFORMATION
It is useful to customize your applications with DESQview for
the GENIUS display. For programs that run in "small" windows
(do NOT write directly to the screen) note the following on
the advanced options screen of Change a Program.
o MAXIMUM HEIGHT, STARTING HEIGHT, and STARTING ROW can use
numbers from 1 to 82. (Normally this would be 1 to 25.)
For Lotus 1-2-3 version 2 and DESQview companions DOS
Services or DESQview Notepad this feature is quit a
useful to look at 82 lines at one time!
o "Text Pages" must be set to 1 when the Maximum Height is
not 25.
For applications that do write directly to the screen, note
the following on the advanced options screen of Change a
Program.
o If the application uses MDS graphics mode (e.g. Ventura
Publishing, Page Maker, Auto CAD) set the number of
Graphics Pages to 2. DESQview requires 128k of memory to
save and restore a graphics application screen image.
DESQview will use Expanded memory if available, or Vdisk
or hard disk to save the screen image. When the ALT key
is pressed from a graphics application, DESQview will
"curtain" the screen then present the DESQview menu. The
graphics screen will be restore when you switch back to
the application. If you are running one of these
applications on a 386 machine and are using our QEMM
driver, you should set the "Writes directly to screen
option to "!" to force absolute direct screen writing.
o If the application uses the "Dual" monitor mode (such as
Lotus 1-2-3), set the number of Text Pages to 5 and
Maximum Height to 25. When the ALT key is pressed, the
graphics portion will disappear, but be restored when you
switch back to the application.
o If the application uses more than 25 lines in text mode
(such as Microsoft Word), set the Maximum Height to 66
(or the number the application uses). Then run the VHR
utility with the MDS mode type. This can be in a batch
file as in the following example:
VHR MDS/N
123 DUAL.SET
REARRANGE VIDEO OPTIONS MENU
To have DESQview change the number of lines displayed on the
screen, from the DESQview menu press "R" for the Rearrange
menu, then press "V" for Video options menu. This menu has
six options, press 1 thru 4 to adjust the number of display
lines you want. Options 1 and 2 use double height
characters. Option 5 displays normal white text on black, or
option 6 displays the reverse, black text on white.
